We always need more space in the home. You might need more space for storage, a home office or even a gym. In the last two years, our homes have become far more multifunctional. In the pandemic, it was essential to utilise every space so we could work, eat, relax and exercise at home.
A renovation project can give your property a new lease of life and make it better suited to your lifestyle. Santander found that a whopping 61% of homeowners carried out a DIY project in lockdown to improve their space. Don’t be afraid to change things around the house as your life changes.
The space under the stairs is a widely underutilised area. Your staircase may be blocked off with a wall, so you can’t access the space underneath. It’s the perfect area for a storage cupboard or a shoe rack. It all depends on the size of the area and what you need in your home.
Here are a few ideas of what you could do with the space under the stairs:
1. Fitted wardrobes
Install some bespoke fitted wardrobes underneath your staircase to store coats, shoes and umbrellas. In the winter months, wet coats and muddy shoes tend to clog our hallways. You can store them away and keep your hallway clean and tidy.
2. A home office
If you have a larger staircase, you might have room for a home office underneath. You can place a desk against the wall with a light, chair and work set up. Make the most of the cosy space and paint the surrounding walls in a deep navy. You might need to clear the area behind your chair if you spend a lot of time on video calls.
3. A dog bed
It’s hard to find the right place for a dog bed. You either spend your entire day tripping over it, or your dog refuses to sit in it. Place a luxe dog bed under the staircase with a box of dog toys and blankets. Your pup can hide out in their personal area while family life bustles around them.
4. Bookshelves
Style your staircase with a fitted bookcase. Store your favourite novels under the stairs in colour order. A bookcase will add character and personality to your bland hallway. You don’t need to take up space in the bedroom with your fiction addiction.
5. A pantry
If your staircase is close to the kitchen, it might be a perfect place for a pantry. Store your cupboard food in the pantry, and finish the space with a door. Pantries tend to get messy and disorganised. A door will keep your staircase looking modern and fresh while also serving a practical use.
Have fun with your home and make the most out of the space underneath stairs.
